Finding Calm in the Midst of Midterms: A Reflection for Joy

Hey Plant Futurists,

The excitement and energy you had at the start of the semester might feel a bit dimmed, and that’s completely normal. We’re often so focused on getting things done and keeping up with the pace that we forget to nurture ourselves along the way.

This is a moment to pause, reflect, and recharge—not just academically but mentally and emotionally. It’s important to reconnect with what brings you joy, especially in those small, unstructured ways that breathe life into your days. When was the last time you let yourself do something just for fun? Maybe there’s a hobby you’ve set aside or a friend you haven’t caught up with. Now is the time to rekindle that stoke you felt at the start of the semester and remember why you’re passionate about being part of this community.

Here are five tips to help you build that calm and reconnect with the energy that got you here:

  • Take intentional breaks – It’s tempting to keep pushing through, but productivity comes from balance. Even a 10-minute walk, listening to music, or reading a chapter of something outside your coursework can reset your mind.

  • Reconnect with your “why” – When the grind feels heavy, remind yourself why you’re passionate about food systems and sustainability. Go back to that moment at the beginning of the semester when your purpose was clear. It’s still there, waiting for you.

  • Build in fun, unstructured time – Whether it’s a casual meetup with friends, trying a new recipe, or just relaxing with a cup of tea, creating space for fun that isn’t scheduled or work-related can be a game changer. Give yourself permission to enjoy the small things.

  • Lean into community – Sometimes we withdraw when we’re tired, but leaning on your peers can recharge your spirit. Whether it’s through your Plant Futures chapter or other student groups, being in community can remind you that you’re not alone in this journey.

  • Reflect on what you haven’t gotten around to – What’s that one thing you’ve been meaning to do but haven’t? Maybe it’s trying that new café, starting a creative project, or simply giving yourself more rest. Now’s the time to make space for it.

You’ve made it this far, and that’s something to be proud of. Take a breath, reconnect with your community, and remember that finding calm in the chaos is part of the process. We’re all in this together, and sometimes the best thing you can do for your future impact is to take care of yourself right now.

Stay inspired,

Eric

P.S. If you're looking for a good book to dive into, I recently read Humankind by Rutger Bregman. It’s an uplifting take on human nature, and it might just shift your perspective on how much good there is in the world—even when it feels chaotic.
