Plant Futures is a global movement at the intersection of climate justice, public health, social justice, and animal welfare.

Our work is proactively facilitating a time critical transformation for planetary sustainability, and ultimately, the survival of humanity.

Our Story

Created for students, by students.

While pursuing her Masters in Public health from UC Berkeley, our Founder and Executive Director Samantha Derrick designed the food systems course she wished she could take, and planted the seeds of Plant Futures.

Plant Futures Bridges the Gap

Our program is creating a diverse, multidisciplinary talent pipeline for the global plant-rich food & ag sector by equipping students with the necessary education, tools, and networks to make an impact.

Organizational Values

  • Definition: Grounded optimism acknowledges global challenges while maintaining a steadfast commitment to actionable solutions and inspiring hope.

How we live it: Plant Futures embodies grounded optimism by showcasing success stories and tangible impacts in the plant-centric food sector. We actively support students with resources, curriculum, and mentorship to contribute to positive change. Our events connect and showcase diverse leaders dedicated to harnessing positivity and collective creativity in addressing our planet and food systems' most pressing problems. Through the power of connection, education, and action, our community is encouraged to embrace their agency for positive change.

  • Definition: Interdisciplinary education and empowerment break down barriers, embrace diverse perspectives, and equip individuals with knowledge and skills for pragmatic activism and informed decision-making.

How we live it: We promote interdisciplinary education through immersive, applied learning programs encouraging students to challenge conventional thinking and collaborate across disciplines. Our Challenge Lab fosters collaboration among students from various backgrounds to tackle real-world projects with mentors from the industry. The Chapter Network values diverse perspectives and encourages students to challenge the status quo, equipping them to become advocates for institutional change on campus. Finally, our Mentorship Program serves to empower a broad set of students geared to change their communities and our food system.

  • Definition: Climate stewardship encompasses our commitment to responsibly manage and mitigate our environmental impact, fostering sustainability and resilience in the face of climate change.

How we live it: We champion climate stewardship through our promotion of a more plant-centric world. By advocating for plant-centric food systems we directly contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change. Our educational programs, student-led campus initiatives, and strategic partnerships underscore the environmental benefits of plant-centric lifestyles, inspiring the next generation and those in their circle to make conscious food, career, and lifestyle choices that positively impact the climate.

  • Definition: Guided by responsible decision-making, entrepreneurial agency, and systems thinking, ethical leadership nurtures effective change-makers of a more just, healthy, and sustainable food system.

How we live it: We cultivate ethical leadership by integrating ethics and leadership development into our curriculum and programs. Students are encouraged to embrace ethical decision-making and entrepreneurial spirit in their projects. Our events showcase ethical professional leaders from across the world who apply a values-based approach to their work, projects, and careers.

  • Definition: All beings, including humans and animals, have the right to live a healthy life free from suffering and exploitation. Plant Futures strives for equality within the food system, advocating for access to healthy and nutritious food and safe working conditions as fundamental human rights. We are committed to the well-being, health, and ethical treatment of all animals.

How we live it: We promote the rights and welfare of humans and animals through our values-aligned partnerships and educational initiatives. Our curriculum emphasizes ethical treatment of animals and the importance of human rights in food systems, while our advocacy efforts address food insecurity, health inequities, and the treatment of animals. Collaborating with values-aligned professional and student-led organizations, we advocate for policies and systems change that reflect these values.

  • Definition: Progress over perfection embodies our commitment to continuous improvement and resilience in the face of unprecedented challenges. It acknowledges that meaningful change often comes through iterative processes and learning from mistakes, rather than waiting for flawless outcomes.

How we live it: We prioritize progress over perfection by fostering a culture of inclusivity, experimentation, and adaptation. We encourage innovation and risk-taking, understanding that failure is a natural part of growth. Our curriculum and programs provide opportunities and mentorship for students to engage in hands-on learning experiences where they can test ideas, learn from setbacks, and refine their approaches. We celebrate incremental successes and view setbacks as valuable learning opportunities, recognizing that each step forward brings us closer to our goals of transforming the food system and creating positive change in the world.
